Uncut Poppy
Get into the magazine

Pitch. Feature. Advertise.

There are four ways into the magazine. Two of them cost nothing and get chosen purely on whether the story is any good, and the other two you commission, which means we sit down with you over video and do the writing ourselves. Below is what each one involves, what it costs and, rather more usefully, what your money will not buy you.

No fee, no catch

Two ways in for free

Pitching costs nothing, being published costs nothing, and there is no version of this where paying improves your odds. We take somewhere around one pitch in five, and when the answer is no we tell you inside a week rather than leaving you refreshing your inbox for a month wondering what you did wrong.

In her own words

800 to 1,200 / free

You write it, in third person, about something that happened to you and left a mark. We edit it properly, which usually means asking about the part you glossed over in paragraph four.

The useful bit

700 to 1,000 / free

What you know that somebody else needs. Insight, wisdom and hard-won experience on health, wellbeing, money, relationships or business, written so a reader finishes it better off than they started. If the piece is really about marketing your business, it is not this.

Free means free. Nobody here will follow up your pitch with a gentle hint that a paid feature might move things along, because it would not, and because we would rather keep the magazine worth reading than sell you something.

Links, and where your name goes

Free pieces carry no links. Not to your website, not to your offers, not to the download at the end. The moment a story is carrying links it stops being a story and starts being an advertisement wearing one, and readers can smell it immediately.

What you do get is your byline, linked to your LinkedIn profile. Anyone who reads to the end and wants to find you can, in one click, and they arrive already convinced rather than being sold to halfway through.

Tell us what the story is in a sentence, where the tension sits in a couple more, and what you can back up if somebody asks. No media kit required, no follower count, and we are entirely unmoved by the headshot in a blazer against a brick wall.

Pitch the editor

Commissioned

The Uncut profile

Sometimes you would rather not wait around hoping an editor picks you up, and you want the thing done properly and done this month. That is what this is. We interview you on video, write the piece ourselves and publish it with the recording inside the article. You are paying for the work and a date in the calendar. You are not paying for our conclusions, and it would be a poor investment if you were.

One profile, all in

$950

Australian dollars / per profile / no GST

  • A recorded video interview, long enough that you stop giving the pitch version and start telling us what happened. No travel, no film crew, just a good conversation on screen.
  • Up to a thousand words, researched and checked and held to exactly the same standard as the pieces we run for nothing.
  • The recording sitting inside the article, so people hear how you say it and not only what you said.
  • A confirmed publication date, filed to the right desk, with your photographs on it.
  • Yours afterwards, for the media kit, the award submission, or the family group chat.

What money cannot buy

  • A predetermined conclusion or a headline you write
  • Publication of a claim we cannot verify
  • Removal of the disclosure label
  • Copy approval over the finished article
  • Criticism of a named third party without their right of reply

The disclosure label

This commissioned feature was produced by Uncut Poppy's studio. The subject participated in interviews and fact-checking but did not determine the publication's editorial conclusions.

Same words, same place, every time. It is the reason a reader can believe the unpaid stories, so it stays exactly where it is.

Commissioned

Waxing Lyrical

This is where readers get to meet the person behind the business. Not what you sell, but what you stand for, what moves you, what you have learned the hard way and what you think people should be sitting with far more than they are. Take a position. Say the thing you would want somebody to hear. If the honest answer to what is this about turns out to be my business, book a profile instead and we will both be happier for it.

One conversation, on the record

$1,200

Australian dollars / per interview / no GST

  • Three quarters of an hour on the record, on a subject you choose and care about more than is strictly reasonable, with somebody who will ask better questions than you are used to.
  • The recording published in full, so people hear you say it, at length, with nothing edited that changes your meaning.
  • A written piece drawn from the conversation, third person, up to a thousand words, so the idea travels past the people who press play.
  • A confirmed date, filed to the right desk, with your photographs.
  • Yours afterwards, to share, quote and build on wherever you like.

Make it a good one

  • Bring one subject rather than five, because depth is what people remember and breadth is what they scroll past.
  • Be ready to say the unpopular part out loud, because that is the part that stays with people.
  • Bring the moment it became true for you. A position is far more convincing with a story sitting under it.
  • Expect to be asked what it cost you, because that is usually where the interesting part is hiding.

The one rule

This is not promotion. If the conversation slides into a sales pitch we will steer it back once, and if it stays there we will not run it in this format. Everybody can tell the difference, including your readers.

Paid, and therefore labelled as commissioned in the same way as every other piece we are paid to produce.

The fine print, in plain English

Terms and conditions

Short, specific, and written to be read rather than skimmed and agreed to in a mild panic. Commission a profile or an interview, or book an ad, and this is what you are agreeing to.

Uncut profile, $950

  1. The fee covers one recorded video interview, one written profile of up to 1,000 words, the interview recording embedded in the article, and publication on Uncut Poppy.
  2. Payment is due in full before the interview is booked. We confirm by email within two business days.
  3. Publication normally happens within four weeks of the interview, subject to fact-checking and the editorial calendar. We tell you the date in advance.
  4. Editorial control rests with Uncut Poppy. Your direct quotes are read back to you for accuracy. You do not have copy approval over the finished article.
  5. Factual errors are corrected promptly, before or after publication.
  6. Every commissioned piece carries the disclosure label in full, in the same position, every time. It cannot be removed, reworded or hidden.
  7. Material claims are verified. Financial figures, awards, credentials and statistics must be supported by evidence you supply, or they are written as your account rather than as fact, or removed.
  8. We may decline or discontinue a commission where a claim cannot be substantiated, where the subject matter falls outside our editorial standards, or where the piece exists only to sell a course or programme. The fee is refunded in full.
  9. Full refund available any time before the interview takes place. Once the interview has happened the fee is non-refundable, because the work has been done.
  10. You may share, link to and reuse the published article freely. Copyright in the article text and the recording remains with Uncut Poppy.
  11. You confirm you own or have permission to supply any images, and have consent from anyone identifiable in them.
  12. Commissioning does not entitle you to further coverage, an advertising discount, or influence over any other story.

Waxing Lyrical, $1,200

  1. The fee covers one recorded interview of up to 45 minutes, publication of that recording on Uncut Poppy, and one written article of up to 1,000 words drawn from the conversation and written in third person.
  2. Payment is due in full before the recording is booked. We confirm by email within two business days and agree the topic with you in advance.
  3. Waxing Lyrical is for a point of view, not a product. Where a conversation becomes promotional we will redirect it once. If it remains promotional we will not publish it in this format, and will offer an Uncut profile or a refund.
  4. The recording is edited for length, sound quality and clarity only. It is never edited in a way that changes your meaning.
  5. Editorial control of the written article rests with Uncut Poppy. Your direct quotes are read back for accuracy. You do not have copy approval.
  6. Publication normally happens within four weeks of the recording. We tell you the date in advance.
  7. Every commissioned piece carries the disclosure label in full, in the same position, every time.
  8. Claims of fact made during the interview may be checked, contextualised or noted in the written article. Opinion is published as opinion.
  9. Where you criticise a named third party, they are offered a right of reply before publication.
  10. Full refund available any time before the recording takes place. Once recorded, the fee is non-refundable.
  11. Copyright in the recording and the written article remains with Uncut Poppy. You may share, link to and quote both freely.
  12. The recording may also be published on Uncut Poppy's own channels.

Advertising, $500

  1. The fee covers one square advertisement for one calendar month from the agreed live date.
  2. Payment is due in full before the ad goes live. Booking is confirmed once payment and correctly specified artwork have both been received.
  3. Artwork must be a high resolution JPEG, 1350 x 1350 pixels, RGB, under 2MB, supplied with one destination URL, emailed to stories@uncutpoppy.com at least five business days before the live date.
  4. Late or incorrectly specified artwork delays the live date. It does not extend the booked period.
  5. We do not design, resize, retouch or rewrite advertising artwork.
  6. You warrant that you own or are licensed to use everything in the artwork, including images, fonts and logos, and that the ad complies with Australian Consumer Law.
  7. All advertising is visually distinct from editorial and labelled as advertising.
  8. We may decline any advertisement without giving a reason, and may remove a running ad if a claim in it turns out to be unsubstantiated. A pro-rata refund applies where we remove an ad for our own reasons.
  9. Cancellations more than five business days before the live date receive a full refund. Inside five business days, or once live, the fee is non-refundable.
  10. Placement position is at our discretion. We do not guarantee a specific location on the page.
  11. We do not guarantee impressions, clicks, enquiries or sales, and we do not provide individual performance reporting.
  12. Advertising carries no editorial benefit. It does not secure coverage, and it does not shield an advertiser from coverage.
